ARTIST STATMENT
I work in watercolor. the built environment and abstract compositions therein excite me. Architecture taught me to draw precise, measured, controlled compositions. Watercolors are minimally forgiving and present differently. They embody risk and serendipity inherent in wet pigments. It is important for me to see the evidence of my hand.
I count as inspiration architects and artists including Aalto, Calatrava Cezanne, Ozenfant, Redon, Saarinen, Sheeler and Wallace Stegner whose novels depict the vastness of the West.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in the West, raised in the Midwest, and schooled in the East before returning west for college (Stanford BA in Architectural History) and a Master of Architecture (UC Berkeley). I later attended CCAC for a mid-career BFA in painting and drawing.
Practiced architecture in the East Bay for over 40 years, specializing in Historic Preservation. I now live with my wife in Sonoma County where I paint watercolors in my studio overlooking the Mayacamas.
