ARTIST STATMENT
My piece is one of thirteen woodcuts, a series of African American women artists who sing and play guitar (and or other stringed musical Instruments) from early 1900s on. This particular piece called Odetta, depicts Odetta Holmes, a folk singer who was considered β€œThe Voice of the Civil Rights Movement of the early 1960s.” I was in my early teens when she ignited a movement for social equality. My goal is to honor these women by bringing them back to life.
