In the heat of COVID-19, while trapped in my studio, I yearned to find a sense in the madness by repeatedly painting the same canvases until subconscious imagery emerged. Concurrent with “Río,” “Witch’s Brew” was an escape into dark imaginations and thoughts. Through the repeat painting process, images grew, exploded, reasserted, and engrained themselves onto the canvas. A meditation through the darkness, towards acceptance.

Yi Zhong has trained as an Architect and is inspired by his surroundings, everyday moments, and memories, Yi creates work that reflects our NorCal environment and the people who make these places exciting and inspiring. Outside of his art practice, he supports arts and cultural workers by fighting against displacement and working together to secure our cities' cultural soul and creative spirit.
